How to Play Music Offline on iPhone

Everything you need to play music on iPhone with no internet — flights, subways, cellular dead zones, or just saving data.

⏱️ 5 minutes 📊 Easy

Offline music is useful for more than just flights — it saves cellular data, keeps playing through tunnels and dead zones, and drains the battery less than constant streaming. Here’s how to make sure your music plays with no internet at all.

The rule

For music to play offline, it needs to be on the device, not in the cloud. That means either:

  1. Synced from a computer — tracks are stored on the iPhone’s flash storage permanently.
  2. Downloaded from Apple Music — tracks fetched from the cloud and cached locally.
  3. Downloaded from iTunes Match — same principle, your own library fetched and cached.

Streaming-only tracks — the ones with a cloud icon next to them — require a network connection. They won’t play offline.

Method 1: Sync from a computer (no subscription needed)

If you want music that plays offline without paying for anything, this is the simplest path. Sync tracks from a Mac or PC and they stay on the device until you remove them.

No subscription, no network dependency, no chance of tracks disappearing.

Method 2: Download from Apple Music

For Apple Music subscribers:

  1. Open the Music app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Library → Songs (or Albums, Playlists, etc.).
  3. Find the track, album, or playlist.
  4. Tap the download icon (a cloud with a down arrow), or tap the “…” menu and choose Download.

The download icon disappears once the file is local. From that point the track plays offline like any other.

Download whole playlists at once:

Open the playlist, tap the “…” menu at the top, and choose Download. Every track in the playlist downloads.

Automatically download added tracks:

Settings → Apps → Music → Automatic Downloads. When this is on, anything you add to your library downloads automatically, so there’s always an offline copy.

Method 3: Download from iTunes Match

iTunes Match behaves the same way as Apple Music for downloads. Any track in your cloud library can be tapped to download for offline use.

Confirming a track is offline

Two quick tests:

  • Enable Aeroplane mode (Control Centre → aeroplane icon) and try to play the track. If it plays, it’s offline.
  • Look for the cloud icon. If there’s a cloud with a down arrow next to a track, it’s not downloaded. No cloud icon (or a small “downloaded” indicator) means it’s local.

Stezza and offline playback

Stezza plays whatever your device’s Music library can play. That means:

  • Synced music → always plays offline.
  • Downloaded Apple Music / iTunes Match tracks → play offline.
  • Cloud-only tracks → require a network connection (Stezza streams them when online, but they won’t play in aeroplane mode).

Stezza’s big-button UI is specifically designed for situations like driving where you’d want offline music to avoid dropouts. Download before you drive.

Managing storage

Offline music takes space. To see how much:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Music

You can see exactly how much space is used and delete individual tracks or albums to free space.

Common questions

How long do Apple Music downloads stay offline? As long as your subscription is active. If you cancel, downloaded Apple Music tracks stop playing (they’re licensed, not owned).

Do downloaded tracks count against Apple Music’s 100,000-track library limit? Downloads don’t change your library size — they just make existing library tracks available locally.

What if I run out of space mid-download? Downloads fail gracefully. Delete some content and restart the download from the Music app.

Can I play music in aeroplane mode on a flight? Yes, if the tracks are downloaded to the device. Enable aeroplane mode, open Stezza or the Music app, and play as normal.
